Halong Bay

UNESCO World Heritage site with emerald waters and thousands of limestone karsts.

About Halong Bay

Halong Bay is nature's masterpiece: a sweeping seascape of over 1,600 limestone islets rising from jade-green waters like the scales of a submerged dragon. Local legend claims the gods sent a family of dragons to protect Vietnam from invaders; the dragons spat jewels that transformed into these karst islands, and Halong — "Descending Dragon" — was born. By day, sunlight filters through cathedral-like caves where stalactites drip from ceilings hundreds of feet high. By night, the bay falls silent except for the lapping of water against a traditional junk boat and the distant call of fishing cormorants. Kayaking through hidden lagoons reveals beaches where no human has set foot, while floating fishing villages show a way of life unchanged for generations. Whether viewed from a luxury sundeck at sunset or explored by bamboo kayak at dawn, Halong Bay defies photography. It demands to be felt.

Best Time to Visit

March to May and September to November offer the clearest skies and calmest seas. October-December brings crisp air and the best visibility, though it can be cooler. Avoid July and August when tropical storms may disrupt cruises.

Top Attractions

Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave), the largest and most magnificent grotto with three massive chambers; Ti Top Island for panoramic bay views from its summit; the floating village of Cua Van where residents live entirely on the water; Dark and Bright Cave, accessible only by kayak; and the pristine beaches of Ba Trai Dao (Three Peaches Island).
