Hanoi

Ancient capital with thousand years of culture, French colonial architecture, and vibrant street life.

About Hanoi

Hanoi, the soul of Vietnam, is a city where ancient pagodas whisper beside Art Deco villas, and motorbikes weave through streets that have witnessed a thousand years of history. Founded in 1010 as Thang Long, the "Ascending Dragon," this graceful capital rewards the patient traveler with layers of discovery. The Old Quarter thrums with commerce much as it did when merchants from across Asia traded silk and silver along its 36 guild streets. At dawn, elderly residents practice tai chi beside Hoan Kiem Lake while the Turtle Tower stands silhouetted against a pink sky. French colonial boulevards lined with banyan trees lead to tree-shaded cafes where espresso and condensed milk create the iconic ca phe sua da. Hanoi does not dazzle; it seduces. Every alley holds a family shrine, every street corner serves a perfect bowl of pho, and every rain-washed evening reveals another reason to linger.

Best Time to Visit

October to April, when temperatures hover between 15-25 degrees Celsius and the sky is a clear cerulean blue. Autumn (September-November) is especially magical as the city is perfumed with the scent of blooming milk flowers. Spring (March-April) brings mild weather and festive Tet celebrations.

Top Attractions

The labyrinthine Old Quarter with its 36 streets named after the goods once sold there; the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university founded in 1070; Ho Chi Minh's stilt house within the Presidential Palace grounds; the One Pillar Pagoda rising from a lotus pond; and the serene West Lake dotted with pagodas and lakeside cafes.
