Ninh Binh
The inland Halong Bay with stunning karst landscapes, ancient temples, and peaceful boat rides.
About Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is Vietnam's best-kept secret: a landscape so dramatic that Hollywood chose it for the Kong: Skull Island jungle. Known as "Halong Bay on land," this province swaps ocean for rice paddies, where limestone mountains erupt from emerald fields like the spine of a sleeping dragon. The Tam Coc boat ride is the signature experience: for two hours, a local rower propels you by feet through a waterway flanked by karst cliffs, ducking through three dark grottoes where stalactites graze your hair. Above, goats cling to impossible slopes and kingfishers flash blue across the water. Mua Cave rewards the 500-step climb with a 360-degree panorama that belongs on a silk painting. Nearby, the Bai Dinh Pagoda complex sprawls across a hillside with hundreds of bronze Buddhas, a 100-meter reclining Buddha, and the largest bronze bell in Vietnam. Ninh Binh moves at the pace of a sampan on a quiet river. There are no crowds, no noise — just the plash of oars, the call of birds, and mountains that seem to breathe.
Best Time to Visit
Late May to early July when the rice fields are a vivid green. September-October brings the golden harvest. November-January offers cool, dry weather ideal for cycling and hiking. Avoid the peak summer heat of July-August.
